In 2021 we began experimenting with no-till gardening using generous
amounts of straw mulch and compost from our chicken
pen in half of our large garden. In 2022, we went
completely no-till. No doubt due in large part to the rich soil
in the garden where
our family has been gardening for 50 years, we have had good
luck with no-till. In 2022 we had excellent asperagus, broccoli,
cabbage, cauliflower, mushrooms,
onions, potatoes and strawberries even though it was a dry year.
The
tomatoes and carrots did not do as well, and the beans were heavily
eaten by slugs. The butternut squash got planted late, and even
though it grew well, it did not have time to ripen.
We are saving seeds in a seed library and are happy
to share and exchange seeds and plants.
